What is PNR status:
PNR means "Passenger Name Record" and it's a record or database of IR-CRS(Indian Railways computer reservation system) against journey details for passenger are saved.To be details: When someone booked or reserved train ticket in Indian Railways, Then all the details of each passenger are saved in database or main reservation system, when you booked a train ticket then you get a unique 10 digit number it's called PNR number and it's printed on your ticket.
What kind of information is stored?
Indian Railways stored passenger information like Name,age, gender etc... and it's saved against this reference or PNR number. It includes current booking status of the ticket.
We all know train has limited seats, so sometimes your booking status is not confirmed and your ticket is waiting for confirmation, it's called W/L or waiting list, This new reservation status is called PNR status.
Where to find PNR number on ticket?
PNR number or Passenger Name Record number is printed at the top left corner on the printed ticket(The ticket that was collected from the railway booking window), If you booked your ticket online via IRCTC website then it's mentioned separately.
How to check PNR status:

Via SMS: Indian Railways has launched mobile based service for PNR check to enhance Customer satisfaction,
Type: PNR<your PNR number> and send it to 139 or 5676747
Railway Enquiry Counters at railway station:
Just go and simply ask to Enquiry Counter staff.
Final Reservation chat:
It's normally prepared before 2-3 hours of trains departure, it's pasted on platform notice board.
Types of Tickets in Indian Railways:
There are two types of tickets
E-ticket: Electronic ticket or e-ticket is only booked via IRCTC website, you can print out of booked railway ticket.
I-tickets: This ticket booked at reservation counter of railway, you can also booked this ticket via IRCTC website and it's delivered by courier service.
Types of trains and PNR generation:
Very first Indian railways train was run between Mumbai to thane in 1853,but today many train run daily include local and expresse train.
Metro Train: These types of train currently run in some metro cities of India, like Kolkata, Mumbai,Delhi. But this train don't generate PNR number because you can't booked ticket in these train.
Suburban Locals Train: This train only run in some big cities in India like Kolkata, Mumbai, Chennai. and this train you're not unable to booked ticket,so you cannot get PNR status for this ticket.
Passenger Train: This train can also be classified into slow and fast passenger train,they usually run between small distanced cities.
Express or Super fast Express: These train are quite faster than the above train we are mentioned,they usually run long distance and you can book this train tickets online and offline both. and you can get PNR status.
Shatabdi or Janshatabdi express: These are very fast and premium quality train,in this train ticket you can get PNR status.
Garib Rath: These AC 3 tier coaches train,and it's ticket price quite low,you can also get PNR status for this number.
Rajdhani Express: These train are fully air conditioned and connect major Indian cities,you can also get PNR number for this train.
Duranto Express: These are super first train, You can also get PNR number for this train.
